9b Datestamp

Brisbane Datestamp Page

The type 9 date stamp comprises 2 distinct Code types assigned as follows:

9a - Numeral codes 1, 5, 9 - 15 (1878 - 1883)
9b - Letter codes A, A inverted / Sideways, B, C, C Sideways, E, F, H, J and K (1877 - 1883)

Brisbane duplex type 3(b) and date stamp type 13 are very similar but 3(b) was in use later and type 13 had a letter code which along with the date sit more centrally

Top line (L-R): Duplex 3(a), Duplex 3(b), Duplex 3(ba), Duplex 3(c). Middle (L-R); Duplex 3(d), Duplex 3(e), Datestamp 9a, Datestamp 9b. Bottom line (L-R); Datestamp 13 (two different types), Datestamp 13a

Type 9b An unframed circle, 22.5 mm in diameter, with 'BRISBANE' around the top, 'QUEENSLAND' around the foot and two long curved bars on either side between them, the outer measuring 5 mm; the date is in two lines in the centre (year in two figures), with a code letter above. Mainly used as a backstamp. Dates seen range from 19 October 1877 - 24 September 1883. Code letters listed are A, A inverted / Sideways, B, C, F, H, J and K. Rated 3R - 5R. The detailed breakdown is as follows:

Code A (7 October 1878 - 18 March 1882) rated 3R - $30 on cover
Code A inverted / Sideways (16 April 1880 - 20 January 1882) rated 5R - $90 on cover
Code B (3 April 1878 - 28 June 1881) rated 3R - $30 on cover

9b PXB QL Duplex Obliterator

The type 9 duplex obliterator comprises 3 distinct types:

9a - QL duplex obliterator type 9 with time in the centre top line
9b - QL duplex obliterator type 9 with PXB in the centre top line
9c - QL duplex obliterator type 9 with POB in the centre top line

There is also a POB type 23 date stamp

Type 9b PXB 'QL' (No stops), in thin letters 3 mm high within an oval of 27 unbroken broken rays. The datestamp is 25 mm in diameter with 'BRISBANE' around the top, 'QUEENSLAND' around the foot, and a dot stop at each side; in the centre, in three lines, are 'PXB' the month and day, and year in two digits.

It is not known why 'PXB' was inserted in some of the type 9 duplexes or what it signified. It is possible that it is similar to the usage found in the type 14 Pillarbox octagonal date stamps, where PXB means posted interstate box; however examples have been seen sent within Brisbane, Queensland, interstate and overseas. Wytenburg suggests that this duplex may have replaced the pillarbox date stamp but these continued to be used until 1910.

Known used from 5 July 1906 to 21 September 1908 plus an outlier dated 22 December 1910. Rated 2R
