Brisbane Paid Datestamps

PAID datestamps were used for cancellation of stamps on bulk postage lots. Framed, unframed and a duplex type are known.

Unframed

There are four unframed types (1a, 1b, 1c and 1d), all very similar but with slightly different diameter sizes, positioning and lettering. They can be difficult to tell apart with partial examples

Type 1b has larger letters than the other types. The 'P' of PAID is more pronounced and the 'N' of 'BRISBANE' is wider in both 1b and 1d. The foot of the 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is seriffed with all types except 1b.Type 1c is distinguished from the other types by having 2 dots on the left hand side. The top of the first line of the date text is in line with the side dot in 1a and 1c and above it in 1b and 1d. In addition the space between the dot and the 'P' is much greater in type 1a. In summary, the best way to distinguish between each type is as follows:

1a - the dot at each side is much closer to 'BRISBANE' than to 'PAID
1b - slightly wider letters and the right hand side foot of 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is straight, not seriffed
1c - two dots on the left hand side between 'BRISBANE' and 'PAID'
1d - The bottom of first line of the date text is in line with the dot between 'PAID' and 'BRSBANE', AND the right hand side foot of 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is seriffed

PAID Type 2
