Paid Datestamp Type 1d

Brisbane PAID Datestamps Page

PAID datestamps were used for cancellation of stamps on bulk postage lots. There are four unframed types (1a, 1b, 1c and 1d), all very similar but with slightly different diameter sizes, positioning and lettering. They can be difficult to tell apart with partial examples. The unframed PAID datestamps were in use from 1893 to 1904

Type 1d has been seen used from 6 November 1902 - 29 November 1902, type 1a from August 1893 to 21 June 1900 (For Type 1a see here), type 1b from 3 April 1895 to 28 October 1904 (For Type 1b see here) and type 1c from 15 February 1901 to 28 October 1904 (For Type 1c see here

A further unframed type is also listed by Campbell but not seen by him or Wytenburg. One example known used on a stamp dated July 1900; it is approximately 23 cm in diameter and apparently without dots
  • Type 1d - An unframed circle 24 mm in diameter with 'PAID' round the top, 'BRISBANE' round the foot, with a dot at each side and the date in the centre in two lines, the month and day and year in two digits. Rated 5R on stamps and on cover

These are the four unframed types of Paid datestamps used on Queensland postage stamps. Type 1b has larger letters than the other types. The 'P' of PAID is more pronounced and the 'N' of 'BRISBANE' is wider in both 1b and 1d. The foot of the 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is seriffed with all types except 1b.Type 1c is distinguished from the other types by having 2 dots on the left hand side. The top of the first line of the date text is in line with the side dot in 1a and 1c and above it in 1b and 1d. In addition the space between the dot and the 'P' is much greater in type 1a. In summary, the best way to distinguish between each type is as follows:

1a - the dot at each side is much closer to 'BRISBANE' than to 'PAID
1b - slightly wider letters and spacing and the right hand side foot of 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is straight, not seriffed
1c - two dots on the left hand side between 'BRISBANE' and 'PAID'
1d - The bottom of first line of the date text is in line with the dot between 'PAID' and 'BRISBANE', AND the right hand side foot of 'R' of 'BRISBANE' is seriffed
