Type 16 A framed circle, 24 mm in diameter, with 'BRISBANE' around the top, 'QUEENSLAND' around the foot with a short vertical bar on either side between them; the date is in two lines in the centre (year in two figures), with a code letter above.
It is very similar to Brisbane Type 18 which has no bar on either side. A further way of distinguishing between types 16 and 18 is by date. Type 16 came first and is known from 1891 to August 1895 while Type 18 is known from September 1895 - 1901. It can also be confused with Brisbane Type 10 which has two similar short vertical bars either side, although sometimes only one bar can be seen. These again can be distinguished by date as they were in use from 1883 to November 1890.
As it was usually used on transit mail, it is extremely rare on stamps and is almost always seen off stamp on the back of covers or on the front of postcards or cancelled to order on postal stationery. Dates seen range from 3 June 1891 to 14 August 1895. Code letters are A, B, C, D, E, F, H, J, K, L and M. Rated Rare - 5R. The detailed breakdown is as follows:
