Received Torn Handstamp

A handstamp applied at the Brisbane GPO to damaged covers consisting of an unframed circle 22 mm in diameter, with 'BRISBANE' around the top, 'QUEENSLAND' round the foot, and 'RECEIVED' right across the centre with 'TORN' beneath. Known used from the Chalon period till around 1900. After this time damaged covers were apparently repaired with gummed labels. This handstamp is extremely rare with only a handful of examples known. In addition to the examples shown here, Campbell mentions having seen one example on a wrapper from Argentina from around 1900
